My Gold Award set out to challenge the societal norms surrounding speech and fluency and to create a space where stuttering is accepted and supported in an environment where children spend arguably the most amount of time outside of their home: school. By educating my school’s staff and fostering empathy, I broke down the barriers that keep students who stutter from asking for help, being supported, and feeling understood. I aimed to create a community where everyone feels valued, regardless of their speech pattern, and where it is seen as a sign of strength to ask for help, not a sign of weakness. School should be a place that fosters diversity by allowing and encouraging everyone to be themselves. I created an awareness campaign that contained a presentation about stuttering, common misconceptions, and ways to support students who stutter that I presented to 60 schoolteachers, administrators, and staff. The presentation contained a pretest and post-test to determine how much my audience’s thinking changed after listening to my presentation.
