Due to a lack of options for students with an interest in STEM to learn and have hands-on experience in the school settings, I created an after-school program in partnership with our local YMCA to teach basic Lego Robotics and get kids excited about STEM and all the possibilities associated with creating and competing in STEM competitions. Working with my fellow high school peers that also have a passion for STEM and showing our excitement for the students participating in the program empowered those students to take that enthusiasm for STEM back to their elementary school settings. By the end of our first competition season in December 2023, I had reached over 30 individual kids. In the following season, in the first half of 2024, I reached over 30 new individual kids. New kids join the program frequently. To gauge a sense of belonging in STEM, I asked kids if they feel they belong in STEM classes. The kids agree, about 90%, that they feel they belong in STEM spaces. The majority of our students are people of color, with a male to female ratio of about 2-to-1. However, I am working with my program advisors to recruit more girls* into the program.
Quote That Personifies Your Girl Scout Experience: I love working with kids! I've heard my teachers at school say that they're watching for that "Aha!" moment, and now I realize what they meant.
