My Gold Award project, Best Buddies Club, addressed a few different issues with a primary focus on disability issues. At Liberty High School, these students are in a self-contained classroom (LRC) because they aren’t qualified to attend general ed classrooms without special accommodations. These students have fewer opportunities than the general student population, especially with social relationships with peers. During my time as a teacher tutor in the LRC II classroom, I realized that they enjoy the social engagement aspect outside of the school, and sometimes they tell me how they wish they could do things that other general ed students at Liberty have the opportunity to do. During the school year, I planned and led monthly club meetings for students with either intellectual or physical disabilities with a mix of general ed peers as well. Through this Gold Award, I ensured that all students feel like equals to their peers outside the classroom. No matter how they look, learn, or act, that shouldn’t stop them from having the same opportunities their peers have outside the classroom.
Advice to Future Gold Award Girl Scouts: Prepare everything a year in advance. It takes a long time to get things approved.
Quote That Personifies Your Girl Scout Experience: It's about the sisters you make along your journey to be a part of the memories you make being part of the Girl Scout family.
