Aviation Conference
As an official kickoff to our spring Aviation season, we’re bringing together multiple aviation programs into one day! Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors can attend one of our tried-and-true badge programs and then explore The Museum of Flight, while Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors will dive into topics like the up-and-coming technology and innovations in the aviation industry; the anatomy of a plane crash and how can it inform pilots’ safety in the future; and more. Older Girl Scouts will also be able to sign up for Museum flight simulator use!
The Aviation Conference will replace past years’ Aviation Week. We are also considering offering a College and Career Fair in tandem. Stay tuned for more details!
Discovery Flights
If you’ve ever wanted to fly a plane, then these highly popular summer events are your dream come true! You’ll be paired up with a certified flight instructor (CFI) who will walk you through the hows and whys of a preflight check—like testing the ailerons, checking the fuel, and much more—before hopping into the cockpit, taking the yoke, and controlling the aircraft in flight! You’ll also hear from airplane maintenance crews on the ground and learn what goes into keeping aircraft safe and airworthy.
Girl Scouts of Western Washington is pleased to partner with Avian Flight Center in Bremerton, Galvin Flying in Seattle, and Rainier Flight Service in Renton.
Discovery Flights are for Girl Scouts ages 12 and up. Please note that repeat fliers are required by law to provide proof of citizenship, or get TSA clearance.
Journey to the Moon: Mercury to Artemis
When the last person walked on the moon in 1972, there was no opportunity for a woman to participate. But things are changing with the Artemis generation! In this inspiring fall program, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors will learn the storied history of women in the US space program—their struggles and triumphs, past to present to future. Explore exhibits at The Museum of Flight in Seattle and learn just how special it is to be part of the Artemis generation—the generation that will see the first woman, and the first person of color, land on the moon… and perhaps the generation that will see YOU take part in our future in space!
Mission Discovery Camp
Made possible by Boeing and Alaska Airlines, this camp is for aviation, aerospace, and space science enthusiasts! Campers will participate in fun, hands-on, unique sessions focusing on the four forces of flight, aerodynamics, and the importance of teamwork. You’ll also meet industry experts and get a rare close look at the night sky—the moon, stars, and even distant galaxies—through telescopes. Classic camp activities like archery, swimming, and more are also woven into the week. Mission Discovery is offered in the summer at Camp St. Albans for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors.
Space For You in the Skies
Bessie Coleman. Hazel Ying Lee. Mae Jemison. Kalpana Chawla.
These women of color were trailblazers in the history of aviation and aerospace. And they are not the only ones! Space For You in the Skies highlights BIPOC and LGBTQ people like them who have played, or are currently playing, a role in the advancement of these industries—and in the development of a more diverse landscape of leaders in aviation and aerospace. There is space in the skies for all! This program is offered in the winter at The Museum of Flight, facilitated by Girl Scout staff, and open to Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors.
Space Science Researcher (Cadettes)
Astronomy is a very visual science, but there’s much more to it than just what you can see with your eyes! Discover new ways to observe what’s up in the night sky and out in the wide universe, and explore the cosmos with a planetarium show at The Museum of Flight. Offered in the fall at The Museum of Flight.
Space Science Badge Workshop (Seniors/Ambassadors)
What’s beyond our solar system? What are other planets like? How do we study and explore them? Take a look at supernovae and find out what role they’ve played in our very existence, tour the universe with The Museum of Flight’s virtual planetarium, and more. Offered in the winter as a partnership between Girl Scouts of Western Washington and Museum of Flight educators. Seniors and Ambassadors will earn their respective Space Science badges.
WING Girl Scout Squadron (WINGGSS)
This exciting, year-long deep dive program for Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts ages 12 and up is the pinnacle of our aviation program! The WINGGSS program includes special swag, a youth-led planning retreat in December at The Museum of Flight, monthly virtual subject matter expert calls with leaders from many different corners of the aviation and aerospace industries, and five field trips around the Pacific Northwest. Past field trips have included The Museum of Flight’s Restoration Center in Everett, exclusive time in Alaska Airlines’ state-of-the-art Boeing 737 flight simulators, a space-themed escape room, and a personal meet-and-greet with the US Navy Blue Angels at Boeing Field during Seafair. Squadron members will also get special heads-ups about upcoming aviation, aerospace, and space science opportunities both within and outside of Girl Scouts.
