Tea has had a place in history and world culture for over 5,000 years. Today, it is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world, after water. We often think of serving and drinking tea as a British tradition but there are many other cultures that also enjoy tea!

Tea is a complex beverage that reflects world history, culture, taste, and plant science. The name "tea" belongs to one plant species in particular: Camellia sinensis, known scientifically and professionally as the true tea plant. The teas that are made from C. sinensis include white, green, oolong, black and pu'erh. These teas and the plant they come from have their origins in China, but are now grown and produced all over the world.

How does one plant make five different kinds of tea? After the tea leaves are plucked from the bush, they are processed in different ways to create the different teas.

Other hot steeped beverages made from plants, roots, flowers, and fruits are often called teas, too. However, this is not actually correct! True tea is made only from the tea plant anything else is called an "herbal infusion".

With this fun and varied patch program, take a tour of tea from the perspective of a simple leaf that changed the course of history and, thousands of years later, remains a much-loved beverage today.

The Experience Tea Studio offers a companion tea sampler kit for residents of Washington State for purchase.
