Frederick Douglass Now at Langston Hughes, Seattle

FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW is a one-man show inspired by the life and work of the self -liberated abolitionist and pioneering feminist Frederick Douglass. ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH has edited Douglass' classic 19th century texts into a jazz-infused narrative, bookended by original writing of Beckettian force to produce the kind of edgy, stylistic mash-up of which vital contemporary theater is made. Inspired by Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight, Smith has been interpreting Douglass materials since he was an undergraduate at Occidental College, subsequently serving as graduate research assistant at Yale University's Frederick Douglass Papers. He has since taught at both institutions, as well as Cal Arts, where he currently directs his Performing History Workshop.
