Patch: Top of the Totem

AGE LEVEL: All Ages

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Top of the Totem Patch Program is a blueprint for a quality troop. Participation in the program encourages the use of the Girl Scout Mission, Promise and Law, promotes girl-planning, provides leaders with guidelines for a quality program, and invites participation in inter-troop and service unit activities. The activities can be done as a group through a traditional troop setting, within STUDIO 2B groups, by individuals, or through customized programs.

PATCH ACTIVITIES: Girls should choose and complete a minimum of 10 activities listed below.

  1. Plan an activity calendar that includes a budget.
     
  2. If you are part of a troop, use a democratic system of government.
     
  3. Celebrate Juliette Low’s birthday, October 31.
     
  4. Visit and learn about an organization you feel represents authority in your community.
     
  5. Mentor a new troop and attend 3 meetings or activities together.
     
  6. Design your own or participate in a council sponsored service project.
     
  7. Share your enthusiasm for Girl Scouts by helping your service unit with their fall membership recruitment.
     
  8. Have fun with science! Design your own project or attend a science program sponsored by GSWW, your school, or community.
     
  9. Challenge yourself! Learn or improve personal skills in a sport.
     
  10. Attend a council-sponsored event.
     
  11. Take part in an activity with another troop in your service unit.
     
  12. Participate in World Thinking Day on or near the date of February 22.
     
  13. Explore one element of WAGGGS, (learn about the world centers, world friendship fund, etc).
     
  14. Become involved in an environmental project.
     
  15. Participate in the council’s product sales program. (Daisy Girl Scouts can learn about the program.)
     
  16. Celebrate Girl Scout’s birthday on March 12 during Girl Scout week.
     
  17. Recognize and assist at a Girl Scout Sabbath or Girl Scout Sunday celebration during Girl Scout Week.
     
  18. Celebrate Girl Scout Week by doing a community service project.
     
  19. Earn a Religious Recognition Award or learn about different religions.
     
  20. Thank people who have helped you in Girl Scouts. Remember to recognize your leaders/advisors on April 22 (Girl Scout Leader/Volunteer Appreciation Day).
     
  21.  Think about issues girls face today; learn how to be proactive (complete “Issues for Girls,” “Zink the Zebra,” etc.).
     
  22. Prepare for and attend a service unit encampment.
     
  23. Plan an event for younger girls.
     
  24. Renew your membership in Girl Scouts for the next school year by the June deadline.
     
  25. Participate in a Girl Scout bridging event in your troop or with your service unit (traditionally in May or June).
     
  26. Participate in a summer activity with your troop or a group of Girl Scout friends.
     
  27. Participate in a summer Girl Scout camp program, attend on your own and encourage a non-Girl Scout friend to join you.
     
  28. Take a First Aid course for the first time, renew your certification, OR create, update, or improve a first aid kit.
     
  29. Become an advocate for girls. Identify and choose something that will support girls, promote healthy living, or positive choices and let the community know how this cause helps girls to become strong.
     
  30. Complete a Girl Scout activity of your choice. On your own, or with your troop, plan an activity and follow it through. Examples of this can be a field trip, a badge workshop, a camping experience, or a community service project.
