Badge: Stream Watchers

AGE LEVEL: Juniors

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Puget Sound is the largest watershed in our area. All of our region's streams, lakes, and groundwater flow into it. The quality of the water in our watershed is influenced by our land uses and the ways we choose to use or abuse our water. This program requires a minimum of 4 meetings which includes a stream visit. You may spread the activities over a longer period of time if needed.

BADGE REQUIREMENTS: Activities are divided into four troop meetings (Learning, Observing and Collecting, Analysis, and Taking Action).

SAMPLE ACTIVITIES:

  1. Make a kick net to collect and identify stream insects.
  2. Prepare a map of your stream site by drawing a sketch of the stream banks, location of pools, outflow pipes, etc.
  3. Classify the insects you collected.
  4. Teach a younger group about how stream insects indicate stream health, about stream manners, about how to make a bug collection net, or how to do the insect identification.

FULL BADGE PROGRAM LOCATION: Go to your local regional office to get the complete patch program.

PURCHASE BADGES: Badges can be ordered through the GSWW store.
