Badge: Gymnastics
AGE LEVEL: Juniors
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: To encourage girls to try out gymnastics as a sport or possible recreational activity.
PATCH REQUIREMENTS: You must complete 6 items to complete your badge.
- Learn what a gymnast does to warm up and stretch prior to beginning her practice session. Try these stretches yourself.
- Learn about and/or try a balance beam exercise with a coach or adult spotter.
- Learn about and/or try the vault with a coach or adult spotter.
- Learn about and/or try some tumbling or floor exercise with a coach or adult spotter.
- Learn about and/or try the uneven bars with a coach or adult spotter.
- Explore different ways you could participate in gymnastics in your community. What could you do now? What about when you are in high school?
- Watch a gymnastic meet, an experienced athlete practice their routine or a gymnastics performance.
- Learn about how gymnastics routines are scored.
- Interview a current gymnastics athlete and find out what they like/dislike about the sport.
- Explore the different types of gymnastics: rhythmic, sport acrobatics, trampoline. Are there different types in other countries? Which types are represented in the Olympics?
- Learn more about rhythmic gymnastics. Learn about and/or try ribbon, ball, hoop, rope, or the clubs.
- How is gymnastics different for boys than for girls? Why do you think that is?
