Badge: Gymnastics

AGE LEVEL: Juniors

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: To encourage girls to try out gymnastics as a sport or possible recreational activity.

PATCH REQUIREMENTS: You must complete 6 items to complete your badge.

  1. Learn what a gymnast does to warm up and stretch prior to beginning her practice session. Try these stretches yourself.
  2. Learn about and/or try a balance beam exercise with a coach or adult spotter.
  3. Learn about and/or try the vault with a coach or adult spotter.
  4. Learn about and/or try some tumbling or floor exercise with a coach or adult spotter.
  5. Learn about and/or try the uneven bars with a coach or adult spotter.
  6. Explore different ways you could participate in gymnastics in your community. What could you do now? What about when you are in high school?
  7. Watch a gymnastic meet, an experienced athlete practice their routine or a gymnastics performance.
  8. Learn about how gymnastics routines are scored.
  9. Interview a current gymnastics athlete and find out what they like/dislike about the sport.
  10. Explore the different types of gymnastics: rhythmic, sport acrobatics, trampoline. Are there different types in other countries? Which types are represented in the Olympics?
  11. Learn more about rhythmic gymnastics. Learn about and/or try ribbon, ball, hoop, rope, or the clubs.
  12. How is gymnastics different for boys than for girls? Why do you think that is?
