Patch: Discover Port Townsend

Age Level: All Ages

Program Description: This program can be used by troops visiting or living in Port Townsend. More program materials are available at the Port Townsend Girl Scout House.

Program Requirements:

  • Brownies - one activity from three of these sections
  • Juniors - one activity from five of these sections
  • Cadettes & Seniors - one activity from each of these sections and two more of your choosing.
  1. Explore the Out of Doors
    1. Visit the Marine Science Center and learn about Puget Sound's Marine environment.
    2. Take a hike at Fort Warden. Try to identify and find native plants. You can obtain the "Native Plants and Marine Algae of Fort Warden State Park" pamphlet from the Marine Science Center.
    3. Check out the names of the boats. Some good boat watching spots are Point Hudson, Union Wharf, and Point Wilson.
    4. Identify four different birds are Kai Tai Lagoon. Use a bird book to help.
  2. The Arts of Port Townsend
    1. Visit at least five art galleries. There are many on Water Street. See if you can find a kind of art you would like to try.
    2. Write a poem about water.
    3. Make a Victorian fan according to the directions at the back of the booklet.
    4. Visit the History Museum and look at Victorian clothing. Discuss the differences between today's clothing and Victorian fashions with your troop or group.
    5. Take a photograph or draw a picture representing your visit to Port Townsend.
  3. Learn About the People
    1. Visit the Visitors Center and find out about events happening while you are in town.
    2. Look at the display about native people at the Historical Museum OR visit Chetzemoka Park. Look at the display about the Native Peoples that use dot live at Chetzemoka Park.
    3. Go to www.ptchamber.org and click on "A Kids Eye View of Port Townsend and Jefferson County and Its History."
    4. Read about the history of Port Townsend.
  4. Explore Today and Tomorrow
    1. Find out how the Historical Museum preserves old papers and clothing.
    2. Go to www.ptguide.com and find something you would like to do in Port Townsend.
    3. Go to www.olympus.net/edu/ptmsc.index.html . Plan your visit to the Marine Science Center and learn about eel grass.
    4. While at the Marine Science Center ask about technology that they use to study the marine environment.
  5. Explore Well Being
    1. Have a Victorian tea party. Try making at least three of the recipes in this booklet or find one of your own.
    2. Play one of the Victorian games with your troop or group. You can find some suggestions at the end of this booklet.
    3. Take a hike. Choose clothing appropriate for the weather. Some good places are Fort Warden State Park and Kai Tai Lagoon.
    4. Visit Abundant Life Seed Foundation and find out about heritage plants.
    5. Try to find out where your family was in the 1890's.
    6. Visit the local art galleries and, if possible, talk to an artist. Try your hand at making your own work of art.

There is also an activity box at the Port Townsend Girl Scout House that contains activity sheets, resource books and additional copies of this booklet.
