Badge: Creative Movement

AGE LEVEL: Juniors

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: To encourage girls to exercise their bodies and learn

PATCH REQUIREMENTS: You must complete 6 items to complete your badge.

  1. Name as many ways to move as you can think of. Which movements take you through space? Which movements are done in place?
  2. Use different body parts or your whole body to explore three or more of the following elements: LEVELS: High, Middle, and Low. SIZE: Big, Medium, and Small. DIRECTION: Forward, Backward, Up, Down, and Sideways. PATHWAYS: Straight, Curved, and Zigzag or FOCUS: Looking at many things, or focusing on a single object or body part.
  3. How does music affect movement? Try the same movement with different types of music, rhythm instruments, and without music. What works best? Why? How does music encourage you to move in different ways?
  4. How does culture influence creative movement? Explore a dance, theater, or sport from at least two cultures other than your own. Can you find any unique expressions or movement signatures?
  5. How does the environment influence movement? Do you move the same way in a large space as a small one? How do climate and geological features contribute to peoples' activities and perceptions? Imitate movements found in the environment or act out moving through different environments. Try the moon, the jungle, or under water.
  6. How can props be used to enhance movement? Find three or more objects (shakers, scarves, balls, etc.) that can be used as props. Try using them in different ways.
  7. Create a movement sequence by yourself, with three or four other people, and with a large group. Which is easier? More difficult? Which do you like best? Least?
  8. Perform for each other within your troop or attend a performance of a creative dance or theater group. Discuss what you saw.
  9. Write It! Find a written way to express a movement sequence. Try symbols, words, or a map. Try to interpret each other's dances or movements from writing. Be creative!
