Girl Scout Gold Award Day Celebration!
Girl Scouts of Western Washington is excited to announce that Governor Gregoire proclaimed September 17, 2009, Girl Scout Gold Award Day in Washington!
In addition to issuing the official proclamation, Governor Gregoire honored Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from Western Washington, along with recipients from the Oregon & Southwest Washington and Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho councils, at the Governor’s Mansion on September 17.
Prior to handing out the awards, Governor Gregoire applauded the girls' efforts, remarking that they were young women who had clearly learned to succeed in challenging times, and were the epitome of what it will take to come together stronger as a community, and as a country.
"These girls," she asserted, "are our leaders."
Girl Scouts of Western Washington CEO Grace Chien echoed Governor Gregoire's comments, remarking that today’s girls aspire to a different kind of leadership - leadership that’s focused on personal principles, ethical behavior and the ability to affect social change. She added that the Gold Award process reflects this, and provides the structure through which girls can take action to make the world a better place.
"While some may see the Gold Award as a culminating event in Girl Scouting," she says, "it is a launching off point for girls to continue to give back to their communities as the leaders of today and tomorrow."
