Girl Scouts in Western Washington will sell cookies in front of local stores and businesses February 29-March 16, 2008. Girls will take orders from friends and family January 11-27, 2008. Eight delicious varieties of cookies will be available for $4.00 per box.
The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program is a seasonal, optional activity in which Brownie through Senior troops voluntarily participate. Since the 1920s Girl Scouts have sold cookies as a way to raise money for troop activities.
For many girls, the Girl Scout cookie program is their first entrepreneurial venture and helps foster a sense of achievement that resonates far into the future. Girl Scout cookies are only sold for three short weeks, but the benefits for girls last throughout their entire lives!
Many of today’s successful businesswomen credit their professional accomplishments to their early start in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale program. Because of this experience, they learned how to be members of a team, work toward a common goal, interact with customers in a professional manner, follow through on a commitment, and strive to do their best.
Selling cookies helps girls develop a wide range of skills, including:
- Leadership
- Money management
- Decision making
- Customer service
- Planning
- Goal setting
- Teamwork
- Public speaking
A portion of the money raised goes directly to local troops selling cookies, which allows troops to finance program goals and activities such as field trips, camp outings, and community service projects. The remainder is used to make Girl Scouting available to every girl in the area who would like to participate. Proceeds also help Girl Scouts of Western Washington recruit and train volunteers, maintain campgrounds, and support initiatives such as outreach, science activities, career workshops, and financial assistance.
