Girl Scouts of Western Washington is currently recruiting AmeriCorps members to help girls create positive relationships, build their ability to protect themselves and learn life skills that will help them thrive. We are seeking fantastic individuals who are looking to make an impact on the lives of girls the greater Tacoma area.
Girl Scouts Community Action Members:
Girl Scouts of Western Washington is seeking two full-time AmeriCorps members from January 4, 2010 to August 31, 2010. Member volunteers receive a prorated portion of the $11,400 monthly stipend, and a prorated portion of the $4,725 education award issued upon successful completion of service to assist in payment of student loans or tuition. About working with Girl Scouts of Western Washington’s Outreach program:
AmeriCorps members will be directed by Girl Scouts of Western Washington. Members will dedicate their year of service to leading Girl Scout troops in underserved areas of Pierce County. Troop meeting sites will be identified in collaboration with community organizations and schools. Full-time AmeriCorps members gain nonprofit and career experience while engaging in direct service, volunteering and capacity-building to address unmet community needs. Girl Scout AmeriCorps members will help girls create positive relationships, build their ability to protect themselves and learn life skills that will help them thrive.

Community Action Member Position Description (Afterschool):
Assist with overall Girl Scout program delivery by leading troops in underserved areas of Pierce County.
Specific responsibilities:
- Help plan and carry out troop/group program, activities, badge work and events as outlined in the GSUSA and Girl Scouts of Western Washington policies and program materials, in compliance with program and/or project contracts.
- Serve as the adult in troop meetings and events. Help obtain program materials and supplies. Help ensure completion of girl and volunteer registration forms, event permission slips, and evaluation and outcome survey forms.
- Help conduct start-up and continuous recruitment of all girls, 5–17 years old, in cooperation with agency partners and other community supporters.
- Help provide culturally appropriate information materials to families and girls that show the benefits of the Girl Scout program. Help invite and involve families in Girl Scout family activities and events.
- Help recruit and coordinate adults from target families and local community as troop, activity, or event volunteers.
- Help conduct recognition activities in cooperation with council and agency partners.
Communicate daily with the Program Manager about program delivery needs and for guidance.
- Help transport girls to program meetings, field trips, and other events. Participate in and on field trips and special activities.
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Assist in the development of recruitment methods and program retention
- Collaborate with Program staff on recruitment strategies
- Complete troop member evaluation and measurement surveys
2. Programming support
- Provide ongoing support to girls, community and agency partners
- Perform program-related administrative duties
- Actively participate in programs as both a troop leader and a representative of GSWW
- Coordinate site project needs in conjunction with the Program Director
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Strong interpersonal and verbal skills
- Strong written communication skills, with editing experience preferred
- Experience with youth development
- Comfort and confidence with public speaking
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people
- Interest in non-profit work and belief in the value of community service
- Basic knowledge of computers, including Internet navigation, word processing, and spreadsheets
- Flexibility and willingness to adjust to an evolving work environment that may include some evenings and weekends
- Completion of at least two years college course work
- Ability to get to worksite(s) independently
Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident and at least 18 years of age and provide proof of ability to work in the United States
- Have satisfactory results from criminal background search
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
