Though the sale only lasts two weeks, the anticipation for Girl Scout cookies often lasts an entire year!
The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program is a seasonal, optional activity in which Brownie through Senior troops voluntarily participate as a way to raise money for troop activities. Girl Scouts have sold cookies since the 1920s!
For many girls, the Girl Scout cookie program is their first entrepreneurial venture and helps foster a sense of achievement that resonates far into the future. Girl Scout cookies are only sold for three short weeks, but the benefits for girls last throughout their entire lives!
Many of today’s successful businesswomen credit their professional accomplishments to their early start in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale program. Because of this experience, they learned how to be members of a team, work toward a common goal, interact with customers in a professional manner, follow through on a commitment, and strive to do their best.
Selling cookies helps girls develop a wide range of skills, including:
- Leadership
- Money management
- Decision making
- Customer service
- Planning
- Goal setting
- Teamwork
- Public speaking
Operation Cookie Drop is a program that allows cookie customers to purchase Girl Scout cookies and donate them to U.S. military personnel. We are excited to announce that the program will be sponsored by KOMO NewsRadio 1000 AM/97.7 FM, Freedom 570 KVI, and KOMO 4. Learn more about Operation Cookie Drop!
A portion of the money raised goes directly to local troops selling cookies, which allows troops to finance program goals and activities such as field trips, camp outings, and community service projects. The remainder is used to help make Girl Scouting available to every girl in Western Washington who would like to participate. Proceeds also help Girl Scouts of Western Washington recruit and train volunteers, maintain campgrounds, and support initiatives such as outreach, science activities, career workshops, and financial assistance.
From February 27-March 15, 2009, 18,844 girls sold 2,773,288 boxes of cookies in front of local stores and businesses. This would not have been possible without community support! Donations to Operation Cookie Drop were also significant, with 112, 569 boxes donated to our military personnel. Thank you, everyone!
